Slab city is located in southern California. It is an old army base that was deconstructed, all that is left are the slabs that used to be buildings. – hence the name. It has become the home to a few hundred folks who want the ultimate in independence. There is no government in the area, although the county police to respond to calls. There is no public water, sewer, or any other government services.
What has transpired is a new type of town – a free for all. There is now a library, an inn, a church, an anti-church, garden, hot spring, and many other things. I spent the day there wandering around – I’m not sure I’m brave enough to stay for any length of time – it didn’t feel terribly safe to me.
